The remaining players must follow suit if possible. The winner of the bid can play the first card, and the suit of that card will become the leading suit. After the melding phase, the playing phase begins. One card cannot participate in two melds of the same type, for example a Q of spades and two K's of spades can only receive the score for one Marriage, but the Q of spades can also be used to form a Pinochle with a J of diamonds. The melds and their corresponding points are as follows: a Run (A, 10, K, Q and J of the trump suit) - 150 points a Double Run (A, A, 10, 10, K, K, Q, Q, J and J of the trump suit) - 1500 points a Marriage (K and Q of the same suit) - 20 points a Trump Marriage (K and Q of the trump suit) - 40 points a Dix (9 of the trump suit) - 10 points an Aces Around (4 A's of different suits) - 100 points a Kings Around (4 K's of different suits) - 80 points a Queens Around (4 Q's of different suits) - 60 points a Jacks Around (4 J's of different suits) - 40 points a Double Around (8 A's, K's, Q's or J's) - 10 times the respective around points a Pinochle (J of diamonds and Q of spades) - 40 points a Double Pinochle (both J's of diamonds and both Q's of spades) - 300 points. If the cards in a player's hand can form special patterns, i.e. After the bidding phase, the melding phase begins. If all players choose to pass after the last bid, the player who made that bid will become the winner, and he can choose a suit as the trump of the current hand. Note that you must make your choice within the given time limit, as indicated by the timer on the screen, or you will lose. When you are not the dealer and if you do not wish to make a bid, you can click the Pass button on the screen during your turn. The bid must be a multiple of 10, and each bid must be greater than the previous one. The dealer is required to make a bid by predicting the total points he and his teammate can earn in the current hand. Each player will first be dealt 12 cards, and then the bidding phase begins. The ranks of the cards from highest to lowest are A-10-K-Q-J-9. 2 decks of standard playing cards will be used with 2's to 8's removed, resulting in 48 cards. Can you predict your score correctly by looking at the cards in your hand? In this 4-player game, you and the opposite player will be teammates such that 2 partnerships are formed. After a few bumps and jostles, the Simply Clean showed a solid green light, meaning that everything was working correctly and was ready to go. Later in my test, the PetSafe Simply Clean started showing a blue light, meaning that the cover or waste trap wasn’t positioned correctly. This seemed to resolve the issue-at least temporarily. As the instructions suggested, I unplugged the Simply Clean and plugged it back in. As soon as I plugged in the Simply Clean for the first time, I noticed that the light was red, indicating an issue with the conveyor motor. The body of the litter box has an indicator light that changes color to tell you about the box’s status. Here, the automatic litter box is displaying a blue light, which means that the conveyor hood or waste drawer aren’t seated correctly. The PetSafe Simply Clean is prone to malfunctions. I Also Encountered A Few Reliability Issues. That said, while the bowl overall looked pretty clean with no significant waste remaining there, it did leave a lot of particles that might have been picked up if you were using a traditional scoop. How Well Did It Work?ĭuring my test, I found that the PetSafe Simply Clean did a fairly good job of collecting waste, capturing all the big clumps without leaving anything stuck to the bottom of the bowl. The Simply Clean runs smoothly and quietly, producing an almost-imperceptible hum and occasionally creaking. That movement doesn’t stop whether your cat is in the box or not-the bowl spins on, moving any clumps towards a litter guide that directs them onto a slowly-moving conveyor and eventually into the waste drawer. Here’s How The Petsafe Simply Clean WorksĪs the PetSafe Simply Clean rotates, clumps and solid waste are guided up a plastic conveyor belt and into a waste drawer, where it remains until you’re ready to discard the contents.Īs mentioned earlier, the PetSafe Simply Clean is in constant motion, making a complete rotation every 90 minutes. Elsey’s Ultra, a hard-clumping medium-grained clay litter with a strong reputation. Quick clumping translates to less litter stuck to the bottom of the bowl and more efficient cleaning. You can use clumping clay, grass, corn, or crystals-just look for a product that clumps hard and fast. The PetSafe Simply Clean works best with clumping litter.Īnd, as with most automatic litter boxes, the better the litter clumps, the better the Simply Clean works. Which Kind Of Litter Works Best In The Petsafe Simply Clean?īefore you can start using the PetSafe Simply Clean, you’ll add cat litter. The area that your cat can use is a ring that measures 9” across on the inside. While these outside dimensions sound generous, the litter bed itself is actually really small. Once It’s Assembled, The Petsafe Simply Clean Measures 26 X 15.5 X 10 Inches. These bags are not included, so you can use a grocery bag or a small trash bag. Once you’ve assembled the body of the Simply Clean, you’ll line the waste receptacle with a plastic bag. The process involves a couple of thumbscrews and some finicky placements, so you’ll want to take your time and make sure that everything is seated and screwed in the right places. You’ll have to screw the conveyor unit onto the bowl, slide in the carbon filter, slide in the waste receptacle, and seat the cover on top of the conveyor. The PetSafe Simply Clean is a little bit more difficult to set up than some of the other automatic litter boxes I’ve used. Here’s How You Get Started With The Petsafe Simply Clean You’ll slide the waste drawer out from the back of the unit, remove your trash bag, and throw out the contents before returning the drawer for another fill-up. This plastic receptacle then holds your cat’s waste until you’re ready to throw it out. This ridged conveyor picks up any clumps and gradually moves it into a receptacle at the back of the unit. It uses a constant, almost imperceptible rotating motion to move waste onto a plastic conveyor mechanism. Instead of waiting for your cat’s presence to trigger a cycle, the PetSafe Automatic Simply Clean never stops moving. While most self-cleaning boxes rake, scrape, or use a rolling motion to remove waste from the litter bed, the PetSafe Simply Clean slowly rotates-a bit like an ultra-slow record on a turntable. The PetSafe Simply Clean is a pretty interesting little machine that does a few things differently than other automatic litter boxes. The PetSafe Simply Clean is a circular automatic litter box that constantly rotates instead of raking or rolling like other automatic litter boxes. There’s a school of thought that when it comes to soft skills, you’ve either got it, or you don’t. Look at Medicine, where aspiring doctors are interviewed for qualities including maturity, communication, the ability to empathise and collaborate. Hugh Laurie’s Dr House, with his acerbic bed-side manner, would in reality never have gained entry into medical school, no matter how brilliant he was. It’s worth considering whether, in the future, soft skills will become so vital, they’ll become a requirement for procurement roles. That situation already exists in some professions. There is now less emphasis on hard skills, and more behavioural questions about how you would react in certain situations. This has changed the approach recruiters are taking in job interviews. And quantifying the results of that training is more difficult still. Hence we’re hearing more and more that employers are hiring people based on their attributes (cultural fit, communication skills, willingness to change), recognising that hard skills can be easily picked up later on. Similarly, the connotation with “ease” is deceptive when it comes to trying to train for skills like change management or leadership. Yet a procurement professional with excellent communication abilities, who is adept at reading people, will be a “harder” opponent in negotiations, than a colleague lacking these skills. To my ear, “soft” means easy, pliable, or yielding readily to pressure. Whatever the reason, I believe it’s a misleading term due to the other connotations of “soft”. Perhaps it reflects the “softly-softly” approach, where managers choose to influence, rather than confront, and to make suggestions, rather than issuing orders. It’s possible that the term “soft skills” simply came about as an antonym to hard skills. My theory is that procurement – having moved from back-office to business-partnership status only a decade or so ago – is, in effect, late to the soft skills party, and is currently playing catch-up. Recently, there seems to have been an explosion of articles and training courses focusing on soft skills, particularly in procurement. However, it stops short of actually using these words. Carnegie’s work, which has sold a phenomenal 30 million copies to date, is essentially the definitive guide to soft skills. The concept has been applied to business environments since at least 1936, when Dale Carnegie’s famous self-help book ‘ How to Win Friends and Influence People‘ was published. I’d be interested to hear if anyone has been able to pinpoint the first usage of this term. How Did They Come to be Called Soft Skills? In contrast, “hard” skills – such as tendering or IT competencies – are readily measurable and (importantly) easier to train. These include skills such as communication abilities, language skills, influencing skills, emotional empathy, and leadership traits. To quickly summarise, soft skills are those used in dealing with other people. My argument is that defining this skill-set as “soft” actually devalues an essential part of every procurement professional’s toolkit. As such this is one of the terms that I hear bandied about many times a week. I work for an organisation that provides training for procurement and supply chain professionals. Once a word or phrase has entered common usage, it’s near-impossible to change it, even if the population generally understands that the term is misleading. Just ask the killer whale (actually a dolphin), or the horny toad (actually a lizard). The English language is full of misnomers. Read about the term ‘soft skills’ in the modern procurement world & their importance in procurement roles while moving to a more business-partnership status. It’s their daily effort, dedication and determination that leads to the creation of the immersive Disney theme park environments that have been enchanting me for almost twenty years now. While most of their names might be unknown to me, each and everyone in Glendale and at Walt Disney Imagineering’s field offices (in Anaheim, Orlando, Paris, Tokyo, Hong Kong and Shanghai) is playing a crucial role in bringing the magic to live. There are Lighting Designers, Graphic Designers, Landscape Architects, Character Painters. It occurred to me that just like some of Glendale’s local residents might not realize that the magic that creates happiness for millions of people around the world is made just at their doorstep, I wasn’t fully aware of the fact that this magic is made by so many different people active in so many disciplines. After lunch, I went shopping for WDI merchandise at “Mickey’s of Glendale”.Īt the end of the tour, I had a cup of coffee (brewed by the on campus Starbucks Coffee location) and thought back to all the people I had met earlier that day. The outdoor patio in front of the restaurant features colorful chairs and tables, fountains, the famous Disney Parks signpost and a statue of Sorcerer Mickey. The canteen is open, light and airy and has a contemporary décor with stylish wood and chrome iron accents. The corridors of the main building are decorated with colorful murals (that often pay tribute to legendary Imagineers like mister John Hench) and beautiful pieces of concept art.Īt noon, I had lunch at the campus. The logo of Walt Disney Imagineering and photos of artists at work line the walls of the lobby. The “Digital Immersive Showroom”, the Walt Disney Imagineering Library and the employee-only store called “Mickey’s of Glendale” are located in smaller structures scattered around it.Īfter registering at the reception desk, I was ushered to a conference room in the heart of the main building. The main structure houses (among other things) a reception desk, offices, conference rooms, a restaurant, a sound studio, the special effects department, the model shop and the sculpture department. The Imagineering campus in Glendale consists of various buildings.
Using Greek letters is to avoid a virus being named after a place of discovery: ‘the Kent variant’ became ‘Alpha’, etc. Four days later it’s named a variant of concern by the WHO and named ‘Omicron’. Omicron first detected in South Africa: then known as B.1.1.529.Given how many of the key players then are still in place now, we can’t expect much scrutiny over the mistakes made. The whole episode offers an interesting example of how the government works in a crisis, raising questions of accountability among modellers whose work can decide whether a country is locked down or not, the nature of caution (is lockdown cautious or reckless?) and the flaws in a Sage system that still exists now, unreformed, ready to spring back into action when needed. This even extended to the Prime Minister, who said later that he spotted Omicron’s fall in Gauteng, the South African epicentre, and used that to challenge his advisers’ assumption that the ‘doubling time of two days’ meant it would keep growing without lockdown. The decision to lock down was made by cabinet members – many of whom had resorted to asking for their own advice as they did not trust Sage. ‘Who knew or understood what, and when, is likely to be the main point of the inquiry,’ Professor Medley added. But this did mean that Britain was very nearly locked down for a fourth time on the strength of ‘scenarios’ that even the authors may not have regarded as credible. That raises the prospect that a subset of people may have been briefed that Sage was discarding real-world South African data on the mildness of Omicron – so its ‘scenarios’ could bear no resemblance to reality. ‘We obviously made sure that the people we were talking to did understand,’ he told me. Recalling the anniversary, I had an interesting exchange with Graham Medley, who chaired the SPI-M modelling committee that fed into Sage. At the time, published Sage documents had outlined a range of 600 to 6,000 daily deaths unless more action was taken. Exactly a year ago today, the cabinet met to decide whether or not to lock down to tackle Omicron. |
